Sony Announces Mobile Motion Capture System mocopi ® for Singapore

Small, lightweight sensors provide studio-free, full-body motion capture experience

  • Record Videos with Your Avatar: Film yourself as a digital character in real-world scenes
  • Enjoy VR with Full-Body Tracking: Capture full-body motion for use in VR games and applications
  • 3D Production and Development: Send motion data for use in 3D animation and development
  • Live Streaming with Motion Capture: Broadcast your avatar in real time using motion data

Sony announces the launch of mobile motion capture system, mocopi (QM-SS1). With its small, lightweight sensors and dedicated apps available for iOS, Android and Windows, mocopi enables full-body motion tracking using Sony's proprietary technologies. Creators can capture motion data or video of their avatars with the apps above, or send motion data to compatible third-party software in real time.

Traditional full-body motion capture requires dedicated studios and trained operators. mocopi, utilising Sony's unique algorithm with a small number of sensors and a compatible smartphone or the Sensor data receiver(s) for mocopi with a PC, enables users to create content or dive into virtual reality (VR) from locations previously deemed impossible, freeing VTubers, creators in film or animation production from time and location constraints.

Main Features

1.    Compact and lightweight sensors that are easy to wear

By wearing the compact sensors to specified body parts using the provided bands and clip, users can achieve accurate motion capture wirelessly with just six or twelve sensors.

2.    Create avatar videos and export motion data

When paired with a compatible smartphone and app, or the Sensor data receiver(s) for mocopi with mocopi PC app via Bluetooth®, users can create avatar content with pre-installed avatars or import custom avatars, record motion data without a dedicated capture space, or send motion data to compatible services such as VRChat™. Further, recorded avatar content can be exported as mp4 files or motion data from the apps, with detailed instruction available via https://www.sony.com.sg/microsite/mocopi/gettingstarted.html.

 3.    Record Videos with Your Avatar

Whether its creative skits, tutorials, music videos, or cinematic stories, users can transform into digital characters and film themself as animated persona in real-world settings (mobile app only) without costumes, props, or sets required, to achieve engaging, shareable content that's both futuristic and uniquely personal.

4.    Enjoy VR with Full-Body Tracking

With full-body tracking, movement is instantly captured and mirrored, bringing unmatched realism, freedom and fluidity to games, virtual workspaces and VR worlds. With mocopi VR, a free of charge VR-dedicated software, users can combine mocopi sensors with SteamVR-compatible VR Head-Mounted Displays to experience full-body tracking in many VR applications.

5.    Live Streaming with Motion Capture

Users can broadcast their avatar in real time, with movement, gesture, and nuance instantly translated into a virtual persona, creating an authentic, immersive experience for their audience. Whether it’s hosting a live show, performing, gaming, or interacting with fans, motion capture brings a new layer of dynamism and creativity to streaming, which traditional video can't match.

6.    mocopi Professional mode

By using two sets of mocopi along with two sets of Sensor data receivers and Sensor bands, mocopi Professional mode unlocks more precise full-body capture for professional workflows. Designed to meet the needs of developers and creators, this system offers direct PC connection, enabling real-time tracking and an optimized production workflow.

7.  mocopi Software Development Kits (SDKs) available for applications in creative workflows and app developments

mocopi SDKs support major 3D development software including Unity®, MotionBuilder®, Unreal Engine™, Maya® and Blender®, with plans to expand the number of partners that develop services linked to mocopi. With these SDKs, creators will be able to receive full-body motion data captured and view directly with compatible software on computers to examine the motion data or stream the live video to social platforms. This opens up range of potential use cases in professional film, animation and game production, improving the quality and efficiency of creators' works. mocopi SDKs also allow third-party developers to use motion data obtained with mocopi in various fields.

8.    Integration with XYN Motion Studio app

Sony's XYN™ (announced on 7 January 2025) is an integrated software and hardware solution that supports 3DCG and spatial content production. Combining XYN Motion Studio with mocopi, Sony hopes to reach a wide range of spatial content creators. The ecosystem simplifies motion capture and timeline editing and utilization, providing robust tools for real-time and offline workflows.

On top of mocopi PC app, the XYN Motion Studio app, an advanced motion editor designed to optimise post-capture workflows7, can streamline both real-time and offline motion capture, simplify timeline edit and export production-ready motion data compatible with most digital content creation platform such as industry-standard formats like BVH and FBX. Empowering creators and developers with unprecedented features and flexibility, mocopi aims to push the boundaries of what's possible in digital animation.

Further, the app also offers customisable file naming, secure cloud storage, and access to Sony’s searchable preset motion database (Preset Motion Library), with options for users to upload their own motion files as well.

9.    Efforts to reduce environmental footprint

As part of Sony's Road to Zero global environmental plan, Sony aims to eliminate plastic packaging for newly designed small products. In accordance with the target, mocopi comes in plastic-free packaging, excluding labels, tags and adhesives. Sony will continue to accelerate its environmental and social initiatives to realise a sustainable society.
